Chapter Eighteen

Carin answered the door. She was one unhappy bunny.

“Where the hell have you been?”

She didn’t realise how close to the truth she was.

“Sorry. Some unexpected business came up. I got here as quickly as I could.”

She dragged me into the hall. “We’re going out for dinner, in case you’ve forgotten. Wait while I get my coat.”

Julius sauntered in from the lounge. “Good to see you, my boy.”

I was baffled. Could this mild-mannered cleric really become a Damnus advocate? Being the suspicious sod I am, I flipped through his mind. Everything was normal.

Meg walked in, dressed up to the nines. She pecked me on the cheek.

“Julius is taking me out to celebrate your stumping up the restoration monies. I’ve made a bed up for you. You’re not driving back to Grinton tonight.”

Julius guided me into the lounge. “Fancy a sherry before you go?”

I wasn’t given the chance.

Carin swept into the room. “Ready when you are.” She blew a kiss at her parents. “Enjoy yourselves. See you later.”

She put her hand against my back and pushed me out of the room.

Jude Carter lounged in his armchair. He lit a cigar and drew the smoke into his lungs. Jude hadn’t a care in the world. His recently opened Mandies restaurant in Lovington’s old marketplace had quickly gained the reputation of being the area’s best eating house.

His eyes suddenly blanked out as he drifted into unconsciousness. A cloud of vapour tumbled down his nostrils and drifted to the ground. Merlin materialised in front of him. He sat himself down.

“Listen to me, Carter. My son and daughter are eating in your restaurant this evening. His name is Kit Milner. I have placed an image of him in your mind, as well as one of me. You are going to liven their evening up, and remind him that I am still around. You will hate Milner’s guts from the moment you see him. I will arrange for four young men to get in touch with you, so they can help you make my son’s evening miserable. Sit them at a table close to where Milner is sitting. This is what you are going to do.” Merlin put his hands on Jude’s head and forced his thoughts into his mind. He cackled to himself, “My son will read your mind to find out why you have ruined his evening. That is when he will see my image.”

Merlin vanished and Jude woke up. He drew on his cigar as if nothing had happened.

Mandies was heaving. We eased our way to the bar and ordered drinks from a surly-looking man. He didn’t say a word, contenting himself by throwing dirty looks at me. A young waitress showed us to our table.

I sat Carin down and nodded towards the man. “Look at that great lump of misery. Did you see the looks he was giving me? He doesn’t seem to like me.
